Emma Oughtibridge & Emily Stubbs: Geometric Balance
Geometric Balance unveils a collaborative dialogue between Emma Oughtibridge and Emily Stubbs, where ceramics and painting cross boundaries between surface and structure. Through an interplay of texture, mark, colour, and form, their works engage in a dynamic exchange that redefines the spatial and material language of both disciplines.
About Emma Oughtibridge
Emma’s practice centres on non-representational painting. Materiality is central: the application of paint, its texture, and the tools employed are integral to the work’s development. She constructs layered compositions in oil, wax, and grit, exploring the dynamic interplay between rhythm and structure. Working across multiple canvases over extended periods, she incrementally builds surfaces that articulate a distinctive visual language. Shapes emerge and disappear, edges fading in and out.
After completing an Art Foundation In Hastings, gaining a distinction in drawing, she went on to undertake a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and English Literature at De Montfort University, and a PGCE in Art & Design at the University of Brighton. With over 26 years’ experience teaching A-level Art & Design, including life drawing, she has spent the past decade at Rochdale Sixth Form College. She has led adult art classes and offers one-to-one tuition.
Emma has exhibited extensively and was featured artist at Holmfirth Artweek 2025. She works from a converted stable studio, Pike Lowe Studio and Gallery, on Windmill Lane in Cumberworth.
About Emily Stubbs
Expanding from collaged two-dimensional works, the vessel is deconstructed and reassembled through a process of geometric balance. Clay slabs are cut, shifted, and rejoined, forming exaggerated overhangs and angular intersections that create fragmented yet deliberate structures. Each piece explores the tension between instability and harmony, where form is carefully recalibrated through its reconstructed planes. A focused use of colour, combined with intuitive brushwork and layered mark-making, guides the eye across each surface, reinforcing the interplay between structure, movement, and balance.
Emily Stubbs is a contemporary British ceramicist based in York, North Yorkshire.
Graduating with a BA(Hons) in Ceramics from University of Wales, Cardiff (UWIC) in 2007, Emily went on to co-found PICA Studios; an artist led studio collective of 23 artists, makers, writers and thinkers set within an 18th century printworks in the centre of historic York. Influenced by ceramicists and artists such as Gordon Baldwin, Betty Woodman and Patrick Heron, Emily’s work has always been concerned with exploring the relationship between colour, form and texture. Emily exhibits her contemporary ceramics in exhibitions, events and galleries around the UK.

Bren Head: SIMULACRUM
Our first Holmfirth Artweek exhibition in The Long Wall Gallery presents Bren Head and her evocative portraits and figural works.
SIMULACRUM
(a slight, unreal, or superficial likeness)
Bren recently moved to West Yorkshire and works from her studio in Slaithwaite. Her haunting portraits and figures, both real and imagined, balance between figurative and abstract, focusing less on accurate likeness and more on emotional presence. Often solitary, her subjects appear slightly unreal, connecting with the viewer through a direct gaze. Exaggerated lines, tones, and colour heighten this effect.
After a career spent running catering businesses Bren made the decision to swap her pans for paintbrushes culminating in a degree in fine art from the University of Hull.
A move back to West Yorkshire has meant a pause from exhibiting but she has continued to develop her unique style of portraiture and figurative art from her home studio in Slaithwaite, drawing inspiration from her surroundings and experience.
Bren has shown work widely in U.K. galleries but SIMULACRUM at Globe Arts, Long Gallery will be her first major exhibition in West Yorkshire.
As a mature artist Bren’s portraits result from a wealth of life experiences, not focusing on exact realism but more on emotional presence.
Almost invariably the subjects are portrayed alone, inviting contemplation and interpretation while challenging traditional expectations of portraiture and ensuring a lasting impact on the viewer.
The process is not tightly controlled. Instead, it is the marks and textures that guide what ultimately emerges on the canvas with a distinctive use of colour, composition and unexpected palettes.

Deborah Gardner: The Weight of Your Heart
This Spring, we welcome Deborah Gardner to The Long Wall Gallery.
The Weight of Your Heart runs from 4 April until 2 May 2026.
Deborah Gardner is a narrative, abstract artist based at Starlorn Gallery in Byram Arcade, Huddersfield. Garden has been making art for over 40 years, combining colours, shapes, symbols, collage and words in an almost conceptional way, a type of visual iconography.
I feel my paintings are beyond words, yet they contain memories and emotions where I am trying to express myself. I use my art to articulate what I see and feel: a means to visualize my inner self.
The work for the exhibition “The Weight of Your Heart”, has been created specifically for The Long Gallery @ Globe Arts. The work is my response to current events around the world, strongly influenced by images seen in the news and social media. I struggle with how unkind humans are to each other and I wanted to use my art to reflect this thinking.

Ceramic ArTalk w. Fiona Newby
WHO: Fiona Newby is a hand builder who has been playing with mud for over 30 years!
“I love that a raw lump of clay can be transformed into many things from sculpture forms to functional pieces.
My forms have many influences, Mother Earth forms from my university days and life drawing classes. I drew a pregnant model throughout her pregnancy, documenting her beautifully changing body.
Currently my Emotion forms are exploring how we declare we feel, saying one thing but the facts are generally very different and contrasting, these pieces are sculptural möbius forms, where the inside evolves outside and vice versa.”
WHAT: This ArTalk focuses on Fiona’s body of work, the techniques she has developed in her career, and she will be explaining the materials and outcomes of her beautiful ceramic pieces.
*Introduction and history of my ceramic journey and how Fiona has found alternative firings.
*Her practice and how she creates the forms.
*Form 1- To demonstrate the refining of the clays surface prior to burnishing.
*Form 2- Explaining why she burnishes prior to terra sigillata.
*Form 3- Demonstrate the terra sigillata applying 3 coats.
*Form 4- Burnishing the first stage, discussing pressure tips and tricks.
*Form 5- A pot burnished half completed.
*Form 6- A completely burnished pot.
Fiona will spend time explaining about combustibles and the potential colours they will create on the burnished clay surface.
Then - Questions Time!
WHY: Thinking of joining us for Playing w. Earth & Fire in May? If you are, this is a great introduction to the 2 day workshop, as Fiona is running the barrel firing portion of this event. You can plan ahead for your own pots and exciting outcomes, start collecting your own materials that interest you (we will be supplying everything, but in case you want lots of 1 specific material) and you will learn the basics around this brilliant technique, before the weekend event itself.
WHERE: Globe 2
WHEN: Wednesday 18th March, 6-8pm
HOW MUCH: £10pp
Andrew Wild: All We Ever Wanted Was Everything
We welcome Andrew Wild back to Globe Arts, for his first solo exhibition in The Long Wall Gallery.
all we ever wanted was everything runs from 21 February until 28 March 2026.
all we ever wanted was everything is a new body of work from West Yorkshire-based contemporary artist Andrew Wild. Taking direct influence from the post-Industrial Calder Valley, Wild’s works poetically reflect the ephemeral minutiae of transient and incidental scuffs and marks; of scratched walls and weathered surfaces.
Reducing his materials to the fundamentals of conventional artistic practice - to graphite and paper, pigments and canvas - Wild has developed subtle, richly layered and delicately constructed works that document a tactile, material-focused exploration of Time, Place, and Self.
Gallery opening hours:
Mon 10–5 | Thurs 10–5 | Sat 9.30–1

Claire Murray & Alison Wren: Grounded
This Winter, Grounded finds its home in The Long Wall Gallery.
Grounded brings together painter Claire Murray and ceramicist Alison Wren in a contemplative dialogue between landscape and form, surface and substance.
Claire Murray is an expressive painter based in Fletcher’s Mill, Dean Clough in Halifax. Claire has been painting for 37 years, teaching art and running her own studio practice, and has work in private collections internationally.
Alison Wren graduated in Ceramic Design in the 1990's and then worked in a contemporary craft gallery for many years, before setting up her own practice in 2016. Since then she has produced tableware for Michelin-starred chefs and sells her work at fairs and galleries throughout the UK.
Both artists draw deeply from the natural world — its textures, tones and quiet harmonies. Claire’s layered, expressive paintings capture the shifting light, drama and vastness of the northern landscape, while Alison’s wheel-thrown stoneware distils that same connection to nature into calm, balanced forms with subtle, earthy glazes.
Together, their work explores a shared sense of stillness and presence — one rooted in the elements of air and light, the other in earth and clay. Grounded invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the material beauty of the world around us.

Joe Tully: AutoPlay.
Returning to our friends at Zapato this summer, we proudly present AutoPlay., a curated selection of paintings by Yorkshire-based artist Joe Tully.
Created over the past five years, Autoplay. draws from life before and after fatherhood, capturing moments of emotional chaos, quiet reflection, and surreal humour.
Tully’s art blends romantic street scenes, cluttered interiors, and pop imagery into expressive, layered compositions. Working instinctively, he builds each piece from fragments of memory, music, and modern life — sometimes loud, sometimes painfully still.
This exhibition offers a glimpse into a restless creative mind trying to make sense of time, parenthood, and the strange beauty of the everyday.

Tim presents two distinct yet complimentary sets of recent works under the title 'Floating Worlds'. One is a series of small skyscapes inspired by a thought experiment entitled 'look up’. The other is a set of four oil paintings Tim started in lockdown that form a body of work entitled 'crystal dimensions.' Both bodies of work Tim sees as long term and on going projects.
Join us on Friday 6th June, 7pm onwards for the launch of The Long Wall Gallery and the return of Floating Worlds, plus guest artists!

This will be ironed quickly before you take it away with you, and enjoy the rest of the activities.
WHEN: Sunday 11th May, 1-4pm.
HOW MUCH: FREE!
WHO: The event is aimed at 11-19 year olds.
WHY: The event has been funded so that providers can promote the youth offer in the Colne Valley, and promote the Junior fit and teen gym sessions at CVLC!
These fantastic t-shirts were designed in one of our Arty Parties, Jan 2025.

Super Seconds Sunday - 9th March 2025
Support Local at Super Seconds Sunday
Join us for our 4th Super Seconds Sunday, a new(ish) concept which we are running in order to help support our building, artist studio holders and local makers.
Come along on 9th March 2025 between 11am-2pm (well behaved dogs are allowed too!) and buy from local artists and makers.
For anyone that doesn’t already know, we currently support 11 micro businesses within our studios and are very proud of the broad range of creatives who operate from them.
With the costs of running a business increasing, we are now looking at different ways of supporting our studio holders by holding a community event, open to everyone.
On the second Sunday of every 3rd month, our doors will be open to the public in which you can come and purchase creatives’ “seconds” and artist materials. Held in our Create Space on New Street side of our building, double grey doors next to Destination.
A ‘creative second’ might look like an accidental fingerprint on a print, an upturned corner on a photograph, a re-fused glass keyring, or a ceramic bowl with the wrong coloured glaze on it. Basically any slight imperfection on a handmade which usually means it can’t be sold as easily, by the artist.
The event will help to save these pieces from being forgotten about in a cupboard or studio, getting them out into the world - living out the rest of their days in your homes!
This market is for creatives only, who are selling seconds or materials they may use in their own work.
STALLHOLDERS – there are a limited amount of stalls, available for £10. If you want to join us- book your stall and find out more information via our Art Shop or the BOOK EVENT button at the bottom of this page.

David Coldwell
View captured feelings from David Coldwell, in his new exhibition over at Zapato Taproom, running until 22nd February 2025.
I am a painter, writer and photographer based in West Yorkshire. My paintings and photographs have featured in a number of publications. I have published two books and co-edited two poetry collections. My paintings have been exhibited widely across the UK and are held in private collections.
Developing new skills and exploring different techniques has continued to enhance my expertise both as a painter and photographer.
I now work from a studio in the centre of Slaithwaite – a thriving village which you can find midway between Leeds and Manchester.
The painting process:
It may be memory or a ghost.
The desire is to capture a feeling, focusing on composition with a limited colour palette. Soon the painting will enter the experimental stage. This part of the process is like the wind: unpredictable, challenging. Sometimes the destination becomes unclear. Colours are mixed with glazes to create texture, depth and atmosphere. The trick is knowing when you have reached the destination.
Decorated Skin
Call out for photographers!
Want to be a part of our 'Decorated Skin' exhibition in 2025? We want to hear from photographers who will work collaboratively with other local artists to produce a group show that explores the way we decorate our bodies.
Interested? Come in to the Slaithwiate Studio, email admin@globearts.org.uk, or drop us a message on Insta!

Van Gogh Poets & Lovers - London Trip '24
Join Jackie & Zoe on this full day trip to The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London -
to see the Van Gogh Exhibition!
As part of our 10th year in business, we are celebrating in the capital, and we want to bring you along for the ride.
We will be travelling to London with Stotts Coaches on Thursday 12th December, leaving from Globe Arts Studio, at 7am - please arrive at 6.45am. Due to the number of tickets we are selling, it would be very helpful if you could either walk to us/ get dropped off/ come in a car with other people joining us for the trip- just so we don’t take up the majority of Slaithwaite’s car parking spots!
The driver has allotted up to 5 hours of travel time in each direction, so be sure to bring bottled water, and we will be in contact closer to the time about their food and hot drink policy whilst on board, toilet facilities etc.
Once we arrive at The National Gallery, we will have an hour or so to get some food from the Gallery cafe or surrounding cafes, plus look at the general exhibitions/ displays inside.
As we have 50 tickets in our Globe Arts Trip group, we’ll be split into 2 for the experience. At 1.30pm, half of our group will go into the VG exhibition, and the other half will follow at 1.45pm, they suggest we allow 50–60 minutes for the experience.
Between 2.30-4.30pm the Globees will be heading over to the National Portrait Gallery, 1 minute walk away, and you are more than welcome to come with us, or feel free to spend the extra time in the National Gallery.
We will be gathering at the arranged meeting point at 4.45pm, and getting back onto the coach to set off at 5pm. Once on the coach, we will have a group discussion about our favourite part of the experience and pass our sketchbooks around!
Arriving back at Globe Arts Studio around 10pm
We are releasing our tickets in the following order;
1st release to Friends Of Globe and our staff, the Globees
2nd release to all current clients
3rd release to the general mailing list
We have 2 ticket types-
£62= return coach journey and Van Gogh ticket
£75= return coach journey and Van Gogh ticket, plus an Art Kit (Globe Arts Tote Bag, Globe Arts Pink Pig A5 sketchbook, a pencil case with B,2B and 4B pencil, eraser and sharpener, plus a selection of coloured felt tips- as per the Gallery’s rules)
